Whoever said that money couldn’t buy you happiness has clearly never heard of Happy Hour. Kidding aside, there’s more to life than just money to fuel our happiness. Although it’s good to keep in mind that money can bring us the financial security and material possessions that make us feel relieved or happy, it isn’t the end-all and be-all for fulfillment.
Although maturity plays a big role in helping us grasp the more important aspects of simplistic happiness, we don’t have to wait until we’re 30 or with a partner to embrace the baseline of contentment. For sure-fire ways to evolve into the happy, healthy, and independent person you were born to be, here are a few daily habits worth having in order to reach that goal:
Splurge on experiences
Spending on the material possessions you have are great, but if we’re being honest, indulging in experiences shared with loved ones is more worthwhile. It isn’t something that goes through wear and tear and eventually in to the dumpster after a year or two. Instead, treating yourself to experiences enriches your life and strengthens your relationship not just with others, but yourself, more importantly. Go book that Northern Lights trip already! You can thank us later.
Define success for the day each morning
Setting that expectation with yourself ensures every one your objectives for the day are clear. Listing down your priorities and starting the day with a positive mindset helps track progress and maintain accountability. Better yet, in a world of never-ending to-do lists, it provides a yardstick of when to consider the day done and go home.
Practice mindfulness
This one’s pretty simple. All you have to do is stay aware, stay present, and observe all the blessings that come your way. When you will yourself to be present and give people and circumstances your full attention, you open yourself up to a world full of color. Mindfulness helps you grow and change the way you perceive things for the better.
Do something you’re good at or do something creative
Doing things you’re great at reinforces a sense of confidence. In turn, a surge of happy hormones course through your body and you’re left rocking a good mood all throughout the day. Isn’t this something worth doing often? Devote yourself to your passion projects, make time for workshops you’d like to attend, and work at a job that makes you feel fulfilled and happy. Your soul will thank you for it.
Have something to look forward to
The beauty of life is that experiences and opportunities never run out. If you find yourself in a creative rut or bored at home staring at the wall, it’s good to step back and re-assess. Call your family and friends, plan trips to places you love and places you’ve never been to. Go on that “Eat, Pray, Love” adventure you’ve been itching to get on! The sky’s the limit.
Turn that “No” into a “Yes” every once in a while
Don’t take yourself too seriously. Sometimes we tend to close ourselves off from things that could bring us the most joy because we’re afraid of being embarrassed or the unknown. The next time an opportunity to discover yourself comes knocking at your door, take it! You’d be surprised at just how refreshing it is to step outside your comfort zone.
