Take A Leap Of Faith On Leap Year
- By Angie Lim
Being and staying healthy is more important than you probably think. Apart from keeping you out of the hospital, which is always good, of course, staying healthy keeps you feeling younger. This gives you the energy to thrive in life and reach your goals.
Read on to learn our tips on how to stay healthy.
1. Stay physical
Keep moving! Doctors recommend doing any form of physical activity for at least 30 minutes every day. Don’t think that there isn’t enough time in the day for 30 minutes of activity. If 30 minutes isn’t doable, you can break it up into two 15-minute blocks of exercise or even three 10-minute segments. Whatever you need to get those 30 minutes in. There are different ways for you to get moving. Regular exercise to stay fit can include climbing the stairs instead of the elevator, talking a long walk with your dog, having a dance party with your children, or practicing yoga.
2. Eat healthy
Staying fit also starts from the inside. It doesn’t matter how active you are if you don’t mind what you eat. You can never out-exercise a bad diet. Want to know what to eat to stay healthy? The rainbow. Seriously. When building your meals, think of adding in as many colors as you can. Red from tomatoes, orange from squash, yellow bananas, green kangkong, purple eggplants, and so on. Switch from eating “white” to brown. Go for brown rice, whole grain bread or pasta, and oats.
3. Keep a good outlook
Health does not just stop with the physical self. You need to take care of your mental and emotional health, too! Because of the digital age, we’re now busier than ever. We’re bombarded with information (good and bad), constantly plugged into our devices so the balance between work and life is blurred, and the pandemic hasn’t helped with any of this. Learning how to stay emotionally healthy will help you not only feel better about yourself but can also improve your relationships with others.
Use social media mindfully. Social media is not the enemy here. You just need to learn how to use it to your advantage. If you find that the things you are consuming are causing you more stress or harm than good, unfollow, unfriend, delete, or block it. Don’t give it power over your life. Instead, follow people or groups that do inspire you.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, try practicing meditation. Take five minutes to stop whatever you are doing, unplug from everything, and just focus on your breathing. Slow down and recenter yourself. Although it may seem quick, a five-minute meditation breather will actually give you a good reset!
4. Get some rest
You’re not a machine! Take a break when you need it and don’t feel bad about doing so. People aren’t meant to keep working at their peak. In order to do our best, we need to have the energy to do it. Get at least 7 hours of sleep every night and don’t forget to take a couple of breaks within the day. You can use the time to take a walk or practice meditation. Look, two birds with one stone!
These are just a couple of ways you can achieve a healthy life. For more tips on staying healthy and fit, check out our health and wellness tips!
